WINTER NEWSLETTER 2012
FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Another great course this time with Michael Fowles and Richard Marshall.
Congratulations to everybody on making the Christmas course such a success. I mentioned at the concert our funding support has been dramatically reduced this year by the Music Service, of which we have been very grateful in the past, but to continue to provide the same level of musicians to inspire and encourage you we will need new methods of fundraising and as much help and support as possible. I am very grateful of the donations made after the concert and hope that we can put something in place to achieve the help required. The Trustees will do all in their power to keep the costs down thus ensuring affordable courses of the highest standard
Leonard Adams
FROM MICHAEL FOWLES
To the Trustees, Staff, Volunteers and all members of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band.
It was a great honour to be invited to conduct the Christmas Course of this fine band and I am so glad that I accepted the invitation. The time and effort from all concerned in making such a week happen is immense and it is so pleasing to see what you are doing on a twice-yearly basis, together with all the work in between of course!
Musically, for me personally, it was very rewarding to see young musicians working so hard and embracing new styles of music maybe not encountered before. Ultimately this resulted in giving a concert of a very high standard of performance that rewarded the very appreciative audience with an evening of high quality entertainment. Indeed, the growth of the band musically through the week was quite staggering and is something of which you should all be very proud.
Finally may I thank all concerned for making myself and Sallyann feel so welcome. Even though she was not involved musically I know that Sallyann really did feel part of the week and thoroughly enjoyed her time in Cornwall. The flowers presented to her at the concert was a particularly nice touch and I am also very proud to be an owner of a CYBB tie and Cornish cufflinks!
With all best wishes for continued success! Mike and Sallyann
MY FIRST CYBB COURSE
My first Christmas course was an unforgettable experience. Having joined in September, the course was the first time where I would spend more than a day with everyone at CYBB. As I arrived, I was excited yet nervous to find out what it would be like. My worries where gone in an instant as we gathered for the first rehearsal. And what a rehearsal it was, with the guest conductor Michael Fowles, teaching us valuable tips to ensure that we would have a magnificent concert.
Everything from the course was amazing. The food was delicious and kept us going throughout the whole day. The tutors were inspiring and most of all Richard Marshall, the guest soloist who wowed us all with not only his playing but also his inspiring speech. To round off all of our hard work was the concert which made me and I am sure all the rest of the members of CYBB proud. I cannot say how grateful I am to be a part of CYBB and the course was amazing.
Charlotte Wood.

HELP WANTED TO COMPLETE MAMMOTH TASK.
Former Band member, local historian and Cornish Bard, Tony Mansell, has just completed the major task of recording all the members of The Cornwall Youth Brass Band since it began holding Residential Courses in 1959.
By trawling through all the Course Concert programmes in the Band’s Archives Tony has listed well over 1000 young players who have enjoyed the friendship of their fellow musicians and the benefits of working with the many top Guest Conductors and Soloists who have visited the Band over the years.
There are a just few Programmes missing from the Archives. These are for the years 1960, 1966 and 1975 as well as Christmas 1990 and 1992 and Easter 1994 and 1995. Tony would be pleased to hear from anyone who may have a copy of any of these to ensure that no one who has played with the Band has been overlooked.
He is now starting on the task of trying to list the Musicians who were in the Band from its inception in 1955 until the first Residential Course in 1959. During this period Concerts were given but no programmes survive to provide any clues. Some names are known, such as Goff Richards and John Berryman, but the majority remain unknown for now.
Tony would be pleased to hear from anyone who can give him further information. He can be contacted by E Mail at tony.mansell369@btinternet.com or telephone 01872 552098. In the meantime the List is available for study on the Cornwall Youth Brass Band Web site at, www.cybb.co.uk
SUPPORT APPRECIATED. The Trustees are always pleased to receive offers of help during the Residential Courses. Duties are mainly concerned with supporting the Catering Team in the usual tasks involved in feeding some seventy or more young musicians, and washing up afterwards. Anyone who could spare some time should contact Phillip in the first instance.
FINANCIAL HELP. As the Chairman said at the beginning of the Newsletter, the Trustees are very grateful to those Parents and others who generously sent donations, following his Appeal at the Christmas Concert. We still view the future with concern, but also with great determination that the Band must be able to continue to deliver the valuable experiences to the young musicians that it has since 1955. Donations are still welcomed, full details of how to do this can be found on the Web Site, www.cybb.co.uk
CYBB WEBSITE. Please make sure you have a regular look at our Web Site, which is continually updated with new information and Course Photographs.
EASTER COURSE. This will take place as usual over the Easter Weekend, Friday 6th to Monday 9th April. Our Guest Conductor is Dr Nicholas Childs, Music Director of The Black Dyke Band and Guest Soloist our own Zoe Hancock, now their Flugel Player. Please remember that we will be pleased to welcome any of your friends who may be interested in joining the Band in September and who like to come and observe a Rehearsal.
LOOKING AHEAD. At Christmas our Guest Conductor will be Steve Sykes, with his son Stephen, 2009 BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist of the Year, as Trombone Soloist.
DON’T FORGET to share this Newsletter with your Parents and Guardians and anyone else you think may be interested.

CORNWALL YOUTH BRASS BAND CHRISTMAS COURSE 2011
The sixty seven young musicians of The Cornwall Youth Brass Band left behind their Christmas festivities to spend four days making music on their Residential Course at Truro High School for Girls. Under the direction of Guest Conductor Michael Fowles, the days were spent in intensive rehearsals working on a range of challenging music, including the World Premiere of the brass band version of Ruby and all Things Purple by Andy Scott.
Andy Scott is the Resident Composer of the Foden’s Band, of which Michael Fowles is Resident Conductor. The Band recently commissioned this piece from Andy and generously allowed the Cornwall Youth Brass Band to work on it with Michael Fowles and give the first performance ahead of the Foden’s Band itself. Another piece by him, Film, which featured the CYBB’s Baritone player, Rachael Sloggett, was also the first performance in a new revised version.
Also joining the Course, as Guest Soloist, was the Principal Cornet of the Black Dyke Band, Richard Marshall. As well as demonstrating his outstanding talent as a Cornet player in his Solo items, Richard sat in with the Band during full Rehearsals and also coached the Cornet Section in their Sectional Rehearsals.
Other individual Sectional Rehearsals were taken by the Band’s Team of local Tutors, many of whom are former members of the Band. With the Band’s own Catering Team providing a full range of meals throughout the Course and evening activities organised for relaxation, the musicians enjoyed their time making music and new friends.
The Course culminated in a Gala Concert at St Michael’s Church in Newquay, when a packed audience of Parents and supporters enjoyed the results of all the hard work and commitment put in by the young Musicians, whose ages ranged from 11 to 21, representing the thirty individual Brass Bands of which they are also members.

The Band is about to hold its latest four day Residential Course just after Christmas at The Truro High School for Girls, when the current seventy young musicians will work with Guest Conductor Michael Fowles, Resident Conductor of The Foden’s Band, and Richard Marshall, Principal Cornet of The Black Dyke Band as Guest Soloist.

The Cornwall Youth Brass Band started it’s 2011/2012 Season on September 18th with an intake of 27 new Musicians, each of whom undertook an entry audition with one of the CYBB’s local Tutors before being invited to become one of the Band’s musicians.
Taking account of the usual loss of players that youth bands suffer, due to age limitations and university and college entry, the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, including its new members, now has 78 musicians, each of whom also plays with a Parent Band in the area.
Led by the Band’s three local Conductors, Alan Pope, Aaron Harvey and Jeremy Willcock, who are supported by a team of Tutors, each monthly Rehearsal consists of full band and sectional sessions, which prepares the musicians for the two Annual Residential four day Courses. The top Conductors and Soloists from the Brass Band world are engaged as Guests for these courses, which take place just after Christmas and over Easter each year.
At Christmas the Associate Conductor of The Foden’s Band, Michael Fowles, will be joined by Richard Marshall, the Principal Cornet of The Black Dyke Band as Guest Soloist. At Easter Dr Nicholas Childs, the Director of Music at Black Dyke will Conduct along with the Flugel Horn from Black Dyke, Zoe Hancock, as Guest Soloist. Zoe who hails from Cornwall, is a former member of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band and makes a welcome return to the Band.
As the oldest County Youth Brass Band in the United Kingdom the Cornwall Youth Brass Band is a Registered Charity and run entirely by volunteers, many of whom have been playing members of the Band in the past.

YOUNG BRASS MUSICIANS
The Cornwall Youth Brass Band is making its annual appeal for young musicians wishing to work with the top brass band conductors and soloists to join them for their new season. With eight monthly rehearsals and two residential Courses from September until April each year there is plenty of opportunity to make new friends and enjoy the benefit of working with the local Tutors as well as the Guest Conductors.
This season Michael Fowles from The Foden’s Band is visiting at Christmas and Dr Nicholas Childs from The Black Dyke Band at Easter. They will be coaching and conducting the Band during the four day Residential Courses, along with Guest Soloists including Richard Marshall, Principal Cornet of The Black Dyke Band.
The chance to work closely with the best known and talented musicians from the brass band world can only improve the all round musicianship of the members, to the benefit of their Parent Bands as well their own development. This was confirmed by one Musician who left the Band last year after seventeen Courses to go to Music College, and who said that, ‘Without the Cornwall Youth Brass Band I would not be the player I am today and would not have had the wonderful experiences that have come my way at this point in my life.’
Young brass and percussion players who are interested in joining the sixty strong Band can find all the details of membership and the simple Audition on The Cornwall Youth Brass Band Web Site at, www.cybb.co.uk

CORNWALL YOUTH BRASS BAND
SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2011
FROM THE CHAIRMAN
We were saddened to hear the news of the death of our very own Goff Richards. His input will be sadly missed however his music will continue to inspire for generations. Phillip Hunt, David Loukes and I represented the CYBB at his funeral, in what was a very moving and fine tribute.
I have pleasure in announcing a few significant changes within our organisation.
As you are all aware Brian decided to finish as Music Co-ordinator and the Trustees have taken the decision to appoint a new conducting team of Alan Pope (leader), Aaron Harvey and Jeremy Wilcock to undertake all conducting duties, replacing the position of Music Co-ordinator. This team will arrange auditions and sectionals through our Section tutors. In an effort to swell the numbers we have omitted the requirement of scales from the audition of new members. I stress that this is not to lower the standard of applicant but to encourage more to apply. Another change is that there will no longer be auditions for section leaders, these will be sorted at sectional rehearsals. Now is the time to encourage your friends to be part of your Cornwall Youth Brass Band. We would welcome old members to return if their timetable permits and for you to encourage new members to apply.
We have an exciting season ahead starting at Christmas with Mike Fowles and Richard Marshall.

DR GOFF RICHARDS
As mentioned by the Chairman our Music Advisor, Dr Goff Richards passed away recently. He joined the CYBB as a young Trombone player in the very early days of the Band and attended the first Residential Course at Porthpean in 1959. Throughout his life he continued to be a great supporter of the Band, devoting many years of assistance to us as our Music Advisor. A full Obituary can be found on the Web Site @ www.cybb.co.uk

MESSAGE FROM ALLAN & KIRSTEN WITHINGTON.
You certainly made us feel at home in Cornwall. Thank you so much for giving us a memorable time with you. Allan enjoyed working with the kids and thoroughly enjoyed the final result on behalf of the kids. They made such great progress in only 4 days. Of course, you must keep in mind the "great conductor student" as well for being responsible for the success.
We will always remember our time spent with you and the fantastic sightseeing including a Cornish pasty and clotted cream picnic which Leonard and his wife so kindly shared with us.
Cornwall has certainly become a landmark on our list of places to return to. Also send our best to everybody else involved in the CYBB.
Sincerely, Allan and Kirsten

TOP BRASS. Mark David, a former Musician with the CYBB has just been appointed Artistic Director and Head of Brass at The Royal Academy of Music in London. He joined the Carharrack & St Day Band when he was nine, moving on to Illogan Sparnon and the CYBB. Mark was taught and encouraged by Clifford Bolitho and the late Albert Chappell. After graduating from the then Birmingham School of Music he went into the orchestral world as a trumpeter, playing with Opera North and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra before becoming Principal Trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra. The Orchestra performed in Truro Cathedral on June 25th and Mark said he was looking forward to playing in Cornwall again and that he was, “very excited about the new appointment, which I take up in September. I will continue to play with the Philharmonia but will have to cut down on my commitments”.
Along with another member of the Orchestra, Bryon Fulcher, who is the Principal Trombone, Mark is a Mentor to the CYBB. Both of them are pleased to give advice regarding further musical education and music as a career. Contact details are available from Phillip.

ANOTHER REMINDER ABOUT MEMBERSHIP & YOUR COMMITTMENT. Being a Musician in The Cornwall Youth Brass Band brings many benefits. There is the chance to make new friends, to work with the best known and most talented Conductors and Soloists in the Brass Band World, as well as regularly rehearsing with our local Tutors. With Membership however comes the responsibility to give total commitment, not just to the Band itself, but to your friends and fellow musicians in the Band to ensure the high standards for which the CYBB is renowned are maintained. Many people work very hard voluntarily to organise the Band for your benefit and it is only right that these efforts should be supported by all the Musicians. It continues to be our policy of course that Parent Bands always come first, but beyond that by joining the CYBB it should be understood that you commit yourselves to attending the monthly Rehearsals on a regular basis as well as both Annual Courses. Remember when you sign your Re-registration Form you are accepting this commitment. For those Musicians away at College or University outside Cornwall, application can be made to the Secretary to be able to attend the Courses but to be excused Rehearsals.
NEW MEMBERS. We have an exciting season lined up and hope that you will encourage some of your friends to join you in the Band, you know how good it is, so why not tell them. Application Forms are on the Web Site or can be obtained from Phillip. There is nothing like personal recommendation, so over to you. Lots more relevant information for them can also be found on the Web Site @ www.cybb.co.uk
BAND REPRESENTATIVES. During the first Rehearsal in September it is the responsibility of the Musicians to appoint by a vote two Players Representatives. Their Role is to act as a link between the Musicians and the Trustees and to canvas, receive and pass on comments, opinions and suggestions from the Musicians, all of which, positive or not are welcomed by the Trustees. Our thanks go to Yasmin Stevens and Dominic Turner who have worked very hard on your behalf this year.
There is no restriction on the age of the Representatives but a means of transport is needed as it is important that Representatives are prepared, as part of their duties, to attend the regular meetings of the Trustees and contribute to those Meetings, though under the Charity Constitution of the CYBB voting on resolutions is not permitted. In relation to the CYBB Residential Courses they also assist in the allocation of rooms and help show Musicians to their accommodation, oversee the Course Musicians Survey and generally assist the Trustees and Welfare Team in ensuring that Health and Safety Regulations, CYBB Rules and School Instructions are followed as well as acting as Role Models for the benefit of the smooth running of the Course. They also assist the County Welfare Team in suggesting and if necessary help to organise Social Activities during the Course and make a collection during the Course to purchase suitable Gifts for the Guest Conductor & Soloist. During the end of Course Concerts propose a Vote of Thanks and make Presentations to the Guest Conductor and Guest Soloist and at the Easter Course assist in organising the Voting for Players Player of the Year. Naturally a commitment to attending all the Rehearsals and Courses is essential as well as the ability to attend the Trustees Meetings at St Dennis Band Room about four times during the year.
If you would like to be considered by your fellow musicians why not let Phillip know in advance, with the names of a proposer and seconder.

YOUNG CORNISH MUSICIANS ROCK OVER EASTER
Given that Roger Taylor, famous drummer of rock group Queen, hails from Cornwall, it was entirely appropriate that The Cornwall Youth Brass Band ended their Easter Monday Gala Concert with the British Premiere of a thirty minute tribute to the group by Norweigan trumpeter, Svein Giske. The Guest Conductor for the four day residential Course of the Band was Allan Withington, himself a Trumpeter with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Professional Conductor of the Foden’s Band, who brought the arrangement with him from Norway to challenge the young musicians.
No less than nine of the Groups hits were included, with the Band’s Guest Soloist, Michael Dodd featured in Love of My Life, arranged as a Euphonium Solo. With movements and vocal contributions from the musicians, the well known melodies filled St Michael’s Church in Newquay with a mass of toe tapping sound, which brought an enthusiastic reception from the large audience.
In the first half Michael Dodd, Principal Euphonium of The Grimethorpe Colliery Band, dazzled the audience with his prowess on the euphonium in several challenging Solo’s, including Zigeunerweisen by Sarasate, described by Allan Withington as impossible, except for someone exceptional like Michael. The Band also played some recent music by two young Cornish composers, Gareth Churcher and Simon Dobson, The Last of The Mighty Few and The Rother.
As well as the intensive Rehearsals, the musicians enjoyed informative workshops and demonstrations from both Allan Withington and Michael Dodd, ensuring they are now better informed on such subjects as, conducting, circular breathing and even playing the didgeridoo.
During the Concert, the Chairman of the CYBB, Leonard Adams, presented the Annual Awards, details below.
With the support of the Band’s own Catering Team and Local Tutors, the Course, held at Truro High School for Girls, ends the Cornwall Youth Brass Band’s season. As well as the two usual Residential Courses, the season has included Concerts at the Festival of Brass in Manchester, Hall for Cornwall in Truro and at Truro College.
The young Musicians will now be enjoying busy summer seasons with their twenty six Parent Bands, before returning in September to rehearse for the next two Courses at Christmas and Easter 2012, when they will be welcoming Michael Fowles and Dr Nicholas Childs as Guest Conductors. New members are always welcome and full details can be found on the Band’s Web site at, www.cybb.co.uk
