A Bit About Bob
I was brought up in Oxford in a musical family (Dad was a professional musician) and played in Oxford bands. National Service nearly brought all that to an end although I did play in some RAF bands. Following National Service I went to Birmingham for professional training as a Pupil Public Health Inspector. That took seven years out of my life and, on completion, I transfered to Cornwall, taking up employment at Camborne in May 1963.
I joined CTB as a playing member almost immediately but family committments and job promotions got in the way and I had to give up playing. At some stage (late 1960's) , Alan Toy asked me if I would train the youngsters, something which I was always keen to do and the kids at Camborne were something special - they fed on music like hungry lions.
Names of juniors I tutored that I remember are: David Wherry / Susan Rowe / Ivor Uren / Chris Parkin / Nigel Cock / Neil Harvey / Andrew Kemp / Richard Rowe / Kevin Goninan. There were many others but memory fades over the years, I'm heading for 80 of them now. Many of these youngsters went on to become full members of senior bands so perhaps I did some good.
No wonder the Camborne senior band was so full of young people and were first class. I enjoyed making music with them.
