Tuesday 6th November - Brass Bands Celebrate Gold Awards

Three triumphant Cornish brass bands will be playing at a concert to mark their recent successes. Three of the county's youth bands put in fantastic performances in the National Youth Brass Band competition and now the three will perform together in Truro in a celebration of their achievements.

Leading figures in the brass band movement say that now is a golden age for young players in the county. At the national competition held in April, youth bands from Camborne, Mount Charles and St Dennis were all rewarded with gold awards. The bands will perform both individually and together at a special performance at the Hall for Cornwall on Sunday, November 18.

Philip Hunt, secretary of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, is an authority on the history of brass bands in the Westcountry. He said: "A lot of people are wondering what is in the water with regards to Cornwall's bands. They were up against all of the best youth bands across the UK so it's a significant achievement."

Out of 14 bands in the competition Camborne, St Dennis and Mount Charles came first, third and fifth respectively, earning gold awards. This was the first time in the competition that three bands from one county had achieved such recognition.

Mr Hunt said: "To have risen to this level has taken a great deal of commitment and dedication, not just from the players themselves, but from their musical directors, tutors, parents, guardians and all those involved in the organisation of their individual bands."

At the Hall for Cornwall, each band will play a selection of pieces on their own before combining in the second half for finale of about 120 musicians. Mr Hunt said that brass bands are flourishing in Cornwall at the moment and points to the fact that the three principal brass players in London's celebrated Philharmonia Orchestra all learned their trade in Cornish brass bands. Trumpeter Mark Harold, trombonist Byron Fulcher and tuba player Graham Sibley all went on from playing in youth bands to successful professional careers.

Alan Pope, musical director of the Camborne Youth Band, is one of those responsible for bringing through the next generation of gifted musicians. He said: "We've got some really good players at the moment and we're doing very well." The youth section at Camborne has more than 100 members aged six to 19. The band is constantly recruiting members through working closely with local schools. Mr Pope said: "We go into local schools and give children an instrument and offer tuition at very good rates."

Tickets for the concert at 7.30pm on November 18 are available from the Hall for Cornwall box office on 01872 262466.

Unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse towards the end of the first half, but after an extended interval, the band returned to finish the concert.

The second half began with "The Rose" which was beautifully sung by Karen and well accompanied by the band. The traditional Proms music then followed, beginning with "Rule Britannia". After "Jerusalem" the concert came to a close with "Pomp & Circumstance". The band apologise for having to cut the second half short, but due to the poor weather conditions it wasn't possible to continue.

Wednesday 25th July - Youth of Southampton & Camborne in Concert

Last week Camborne Youth Band joined forces with Southampton Youth Band for a concert at County Hall in Truro. The massed band of about 80 players had a joint rehearsal at Tuckingmill Pavillion on Monday evening in preparation for the concert on Wednesday.

The concert began with Southampton Youth Band under their Musical Director, Ian Smith, and their Assistant Musical Director, John Hanchett. Their entertaining programme included the march "Praise", "Pirates Of The Caribbean", "Concerto De Aranjeuz", "Benedictus" and "Let's Face The Music and Dance".

Camborne Youth, directed by Alan Pope, then took to the stage beginning with a piece that is relatively new to their repertoire; "Rocky - Gonna fly now" from the motion picture "Rocky". Samuel Eddy then gave an outstanding performance of "Nessun Dorma" on soprano before he was joined by the solo cornets in their feature "12th Street Rag". Jeremy Taylor then once again wowed the crowds with his speedy rendition of "Helter Skelter" on the xylophone. To bring their set to close the band finished with "Macarthur Park".

To end the evening in fine style the bands joined forces for the finale. Ian Smith conducted the massed band in the march "Aces High", "James Bond" and "Hootenanny". Monday 23rd July - Standing Ovation Received in Constantine

Yesterday evening was Constantine Silver Band's 26th Annual Brass On The Grass featuring the bands of St Kevern, Helston and Camborne. The event began at 6:30 pm when, one after the other, the three bands marched through the village of Constantine up to the marquee where the concerts then took place.

The concerts began at 7 O'clock with St Keverne Band, led by Stuart Chappell, taking to the stage first. The compere for the evening was Mrs. Janette Eathorne of BBC Radio Cornwall. Following St Keverne's performance, which included a unique arrangement of the theme music from "Chicken Run", was Helston Town Band directed by John Hitchins. Their set came to a fine close with Peter Graham's "Gaelforce".

It was then Camborne Town Band's turn to take to the stage, conducted by Jeremy Willcock. The band began with John Williams' "Liberty Fanfare" which was followed in fine style by Andrew Mitchell in the flugel horn solo "Concerto De Aranjuez". "Funiculi Funicula Rhapsody", better known as Napoli, featured third in the Band's programme. The talented euphonium section of Robert Jose and Kevin Mackenzie then performed the duet, "Rondoletto for Euphoniums". "The Lost Chord" by Arthur Sullivan, arranged by Gordon Langford, went down a storm with the large audience before the band played their finale, "Toccata in D Minor". The band then received a standing ovation for their performance and with the audience shouting for more, the band gave them another taste of "Toccata".

The three bands combined, under the baton of Ian Edwards, for the massed band spectacular to bring the evening to a close. Beginning with the march "Castle Coch", the massed bands then played Derek Broadbent's fun arangement of "The Floral Dance". The audience participation then began as everyone sang along to "Land of Hope and Glory" from "Pomp and Circumstance" and of course, our Cornish national anthem, "Trelawney".
